From the Birth to Thrive Online:
We now understand that early learning begins long before preschool. A recent TED Talk looks at how learning can actually begin in the womb.
The lecture explores the field of fetal origins, a fascinating new area of research on how a woman’s environment during pregnancy affects her child. Veteran science journalist Annie Murphy Paul provides a look at fetal origins. Paul, for example, explains how scientists are now learning what a pregnant woman eats and how she lives can shape her unborn child’s tastes and behavior.
One of the most fascinating sections of the speech is when Paul talks about Holland’s Hunger Winter. Residents of Holland struggled with little food during World War II under siege by Germany. Paul discusses the impact on children born in the months immediately following the siege.
